96 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion

2013 Caillard Shiraz is deep blood red in colour, with intense dark plum, blackberry, praline, espresso aromas. The palate is intensely flavoured yet refined with fresh deep-set dark plum, dark chocolate, mocha flavours, fine supple tannins and vanilla oak notes. It finishes chocolaty with superb mineral length. This is a wine of lovely precision, generosity and elegance. It is drinking beautifully now but will age for many years building up more richness and complexity with time.

  • 2013 Caillard Barossa Valley Shiraz is a wonderful vintage. Although 2013 will be remembered as one of “the driest, earliest and shortest” vintages in living memory, it also yielded some pretty spectacular fruit. Our Shiraz possessed beautiful deep colours, superb aromatics and generous concentrated flavours. The overall balance, fruit complexity and oak integration are impressive.

Variety and Provenance: 100% BAROSSA VALLEY

The fruit is sourced from neighbouring vineyards on the western edge of the Barossa Valley, comprising mature colonial vinestock material, including the highly aromatic 19th Century Chateau Tahbilk selection.

Maturation:The wine was matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak for around 15 months.

    Vinification:

The wine was traditionally vinified in open fermenters and then pressed into a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques. After 15 months maturation, the wine was bottled and then allowed to settle for six months before release.

With over six months bottle maturation at release, all the elements are in harmony. We are thrilled with the result. This is a highly contemporary Barossa Shiraz with beautiful fruit definition, underlying oak and supple textures. It captures the essence of the Barossa landscape. Seductive, generous, warm and complete, it evokes the compelling paradox of elegance and power.

It is drinking beautifully now but will age for many years building up more richness and complexity with time.

The label painting, inspired by the dragon and phoenix motifs, is of an Australian Bird of Paradise and a Goanna, set against rich red soils. 2013 Caillard Barossa Valley Shiraz captures the aesthetic of the Barossa landscape, our imagination and time.
