94 points ★★★★★ James Halliday Wine Companion

"Caillard Mataro 2009 is a gorgeously perfumed wine with intense blackberry / praline / earthy / herb-garden aromas and flavours, superb mid-palate richness, underlying savoury new oak, supple loose-knit tannins and delicious minerality. This elegant, medium-bodied and versatile wine is ideally matched with roast meats, poultry and all types of cheese dishes."

    Variety and Provenance:

100% BAROSSA VALLEY MATARO.  Caillard Mataro is made from small parcels of exceptional quality mataro sourced from the Georgiadis Estate vineyard at Dorrien and Schillers Vineyard near Kalimna. The vine age ranges from 20 to 65 years.

    Vintage Notes:

2009 was a classical Barossa vintage. The growing season was near-perfect with no disease pressure and superb ripening conditions.

    Vinification:

2009 Caillard Mataro was vinified intuitively to the weight and character of the fruit. The wine was de-stemmed, gently crushed and cold-soaked before vinification in two-tonne open stainless steel dairy vats. Regular hand plunging and pump-overs were carried out to optimise colour and extraction. At the end of fermentation the wine was allowed to macerate on skins for around 7 days, before being pressed off into a mixture of new and seasoned French oak for approximately 12 months before blending and bottling.
